Shipyard Fitter
Automation Personnel Services is seeking experienced Shipyard Fitters for a high-production marine environment. This role is ideal for candidates with prior shipyard or industrial experience who are skilled in steel fitting, structural alignment, and material preparation. In this position, you will support vessel repairs, hull replacements, and structural fabrication projects by ensuring precise fit-up and readiness for welding operations.
Pay Rate
$24.00-26.00 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule and Hours
Monday-Friday 7:00 am-3:30 pm
Shipyard Fitter Duties and Responsibilities
- Fit and align structural and plate steel components for hull replacements, tank work, and vessel repairs, ensuring proper positioning and structural integrity.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to accurately lay out and assemble materials.
- Measure, cut, grind, and prepare materials to ensure proper fit-up prior to welding.
- Operate cutting tools such as oxy-acetylene torches, plasma cutters, and other equipment to shape and modify steel components.
- Inspect fitted components for accuracy, alignment, and quality before welding begins.
- Assist welders and other team members by ensuring materials and work areas are properly prepared.
- Safely move and position materials using forklifts or other material-handling equipment as required.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and follow all safety procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- Support general shipyard operations, including material handling and project preparation.
Shipyard Fitter Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience in steel fitting in a shipyard or similar industrial environment.
- Prior shipyard, marine, or structural fabrication experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and perform accurate measurements and layouts.
- Experience with cutting and shaping tools such as oxy-acetylene torches or plasma cutters.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure proper fit-up before welding.
- Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting 50–75 lbs regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in confined or industrial spaces for extended periods.
- Must be dependable, safety-conscious, and able to follow directions from supervisors.
- Ability to pass drug screening in accordance with company and client requirements
